CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
A white card (or general construction induction card) is required for workers who want to carry out construction work.
People who need a white card include:
• site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople
• people who access operational construction zones (unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person)
• workers whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones.
The white card becomes void if you haven't carried out construction work for two consecutive years or more. Successful completion of this unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.
The course material covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.
Introduction
Course Delivery
The course will see the candidate attend the College for one (1) day. The course is mixed mode delivery with participants undertaking theory based learning in the classroom. Some practical activities will be undertaken (where suitable), this will see participants involved in group activities such as applying PPE correctly, completing a risk assessment, being involved in consultation in developing a safe work method statement and also reviewing emergency procedures and identifying a fire extinguisher and other relevant information. These activities will run in various weather temperature fluctuations. Please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing including enclosed footwear.
Licencing and Regulations
Legislative and regulatory requirements are applicable to this unit of competency. This unit meets the general construction induction training requirements of:
- Part 1.1 Definitions and Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations;
- Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia; and
- Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria.
Upon completion of training with the RTO, and if deemed competent, the student will be issued with an Interim Certificate that will be valid for 60 days (allowing them to work) until their White card arrives (in less than 30 days). This assessment is conducted by a Safework approved Training organisation.
Entry Requirements
Participant must be at least 14 years of age.
Course Requirements
The participant will be required to supply evidence of identity (EOI) equal to 100 points on the day of training. EOI includes originals (copies cannot be accepted) of either a passport or birth certificate plus a photo I.D document e.g. driver's licence.
There are specific language, literacy and numeracy requirements of some of the units in this course.
In order to be deemed competent, participants must be able to:
• read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to course
• speak clearly and unambiguously in English
• explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues
• understand Work Health Safety requirements.
Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Upon enrolment you will be asked to complete a Language Literacy & Numeracy assessment regarding your level of English and literacy and numeracy skills.
If you have enrolled online, a WRCC staff member will contact you to discuss this. If the participant identifies as requiring assistance the College has a Student Support Officer that can offer assistance prior to the course commencement.
Failure to complete the LLN assessment prior to the course and answering all questions honestly may result in the course not going ahead. Also, their enrolment fee will be forfeited and they will need to commence the enrolment process again.
If the College deems the applicant as having skill levels below what are required to complete the course, WRCC will provide guidance on what support service are available.
